Black History Month at Park Brook

Black History Month at Park Brook

February is Black History Month, a time to both celebrate the contributions to our community and nation by Black individuals and inspire our students to achieve their dreams. Here are some of the activities happening at Park Brook this month:

  • We'll be holding listening sessions for our school community's Black caregivers on Feb. 8, 9, and 18. This is a space for parents and guardians to share their perspectives not only on Black History month, but also on our school and the needs that they see at Park Brook. Two of the sessions are specifically for fathers who are Black; the rest of the sessions are open to all Black parents/guardians. Sign up here or by calling the school office.
  • Mr. Taylor will read a book by Alan Page to students in grades 2-5 on Thursday, Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. via Google Meet. This will also be a time to share a bit more about Alan Page's contributions to the State of Minnesota. Please watch your email for the Google Meet information.
  • Throughout the school are posters that highlight the accomplishments of Black individuals. Our staff's goal is for students to know not only about Black individuals who are considered famous, such as Rosa Parks, but also those whose accomplishments are not as well known.
  • In music class this month students will learn about jazz music, which has its roots in the African-American communities of New Orleans.
